EU Parliament in Brussels received a petition with more than 50,000 signatures from animal‑welfare organisations, calling for the abolition of European agricultural subsidies that support the breeding of bulls for bullfights and related festivals. The petition, compiled by CAS International and World Animal Protection Denmark, totals 51,771 signatures from 93 countries, including all 27 EU member states.
It estimates that roughly €200 million per year is directed to bull breeders, a figure that the organisations say is used to fund animal suffering for entertainment. EU officials are currently drafting a new Common Agricultural Policy for the period after 2027, and the petition’s authors urge that the policy explicitly prohibit subsidies for bull breeding linked to bullfighting.
Danish MEP Niels Fuglsang, who received the petition, said he would bring the issue into policy discussions. The petition is supported by more than 50 animal‑welfare groups across Europe and beyond.
